Housing
Comité focuses mainly on land development and housing. Working with its member families and individuals, Comité acquires large parcels of desert. It subdivides and develops these, installing water and sewer systems, streets and street lights and dedicating land for schools and parks.

Financing
Comité helps the members in many ways. Incomes range from $10,000 to $30,000. Half of them don't have any credit. That's because in Mexico, there is no credit. Some we arrange to join a credit union, borrow $500, and pay it back so that they can get a credit report. We help them get construction loans and mortgages. We get them up to $10,000 in subsidy for down payments and other costs. In the self-help program, we teach them how to build their own homes.
"Building our home was hard work. We had to learn how to use hammer and nails. We spend a year with all the people who are our neighbors now."

Self Help
With support from Rural LISC, Comité created a network of self-help housing providers, involving six groups banding together to secure subsidies and deliver peer-to-peer technical assistance. So far, the network has secured one million dollars and is using these funds to subsidize the development of 100 self-help homes - 53 of which have been completed.
